Metal-Surfaced Garage Flooring Tiles: The Ultimate in Toughness

2009-01-19 - 15:48 | Videos |

Modular tiles are a great solution for protecting your garage floor. They’re easy to install, portable, and look nice. They’re also durable, but some more so than others.

Many tile systems can support literally tens of thousands of pounds of cars, trucks, and SUVs without issue. This load-bearing ability comes from the understructure of the tiles which distribute weight evenly from the surface to the floor.

With good engineering comes strength, but how tough is the surface of these tiles? In general, pretty tough — but certain applications warrant something more. This is where metal surfaced tiles come to the rescue. The tops of these tiles are aluminum, not copolymer like others, making them the most resistant surfaces on the market.

There are pros and cons to consider when looking at metal-surfaced tiles. First, they cost more than regular tiles. But again, they’re often employed in specialty applications which merit the expense like trade shows, industrial applications, and high-traffic garages. On the plus side, they look amazing. The surface looks like chrome, but without the weight and susceptibility to rust. One of the primary benefits of garage floor tiles compared to epoxy, laminates, and other solutions is that they’re modular. If one is damaged, you can just pop in another and get on with you life. This also means you can mix an match different types of tiles in a single application. You might choose to install both metal and traditional tiles, using metal only in particularly high-traffic areas.

There are a number of sites that have online design tools to help you mix and match garage flooring styles.
